Gujarati language just hit a new milestone. Bhagwadgomandal, the biggest lexicon and encyclopaedia in Gujarati, which has nine volumes
spread over 10,000 pages just went online.
Containing 2.81 lakh words with meanings, Bhagwadgomandal has 8.22 lakh words which includes information that can be reached from a key word.
The process to prepare this magnum opus was undertaken in Gondal by the visionary Maharaja Bhagwadsinhji of this tiny princely state of erstwhile Kathiawar. The work took 27 years till it was first published in 1958.
Now you can access this encyclopaedia at the click of a button. In a first-ever initiative of its kind, the Gujarati lexicon supported by the Chandaria Foundation on Friday announced the digitisation of the Bhagwadgomandal by showcasing the beta version website.
Mahatma Gandhi, while blessing this adventure had written a letter to its editor Chandulal B Patel that “I am spellbound with your adventure and it will serve our mother tongue in a big way”.
The nine volumes of Bhagwadgomandal were in the list of rare books, because only 500 copies were printed of its first edition, and by 1958, all these copies were sold out.
Speaking on the occasion, Ratilal Chandaria said, “We wish to promote the use of Gujarati language so that it does not go extinct. By digitising the Bhagwadgomandal we wish to extend its appeal to today’s generation. Furthermore there is a huge segment of Gujarati population that lives abroad. This initiative will enable Gujaratis living abroad to keep in touch with their roots and help understand and learn the language better.”
Speaking on the occasion, litterateurs Dhiruben Patel said “Bhagwadgomandal is a cultural milestone of the Gujarati language. It is the result of 27 years of religious scrutinising and researching the rich vocabulary of the Gujarati language by Maharaja Bhagwadsinhji who played a pivotal role in promoting Gujarati language at a global level. It would surely be an exhilarating experience for admirers of Gujarati language.”
