Faculty training and development programmes for science teachers are common, with a lot changing in their field. National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad is offering a similar opportunity for art and craft teachers.

Industry programmes and projects (IP&P) department at the institute is conducting a three-day summer workshop ‘Thinking with Design’.

Starting on April 21, its objective is to orient and empower teachers to benefit students by moulding their creative thinking towards design.

“There’s a slight distinction between art and design. The world has become open to the concept of design and this sensitivity needs to be instilled in children at an early age. This will be possible only if teachers have an inclination towards design,” said activity chairperson of IP&P Anil Sinha who will conducting the workshop.

At the workshop, minds of teachers will be opened up. So that they give students a chance to experiment. Art can’t be taught with instructions since it’s a creative field, only techniques can be taught, added Sinha.

The programme content will include what and why of design, elements and processes, and colour and design. It will have lecture sessions, individual and group assignments and case studies.

“We have received numerous inquiries, but confirmation only from 15 participants. While none are from Gujarat, eight are from Kolkata,” said Rupali Rai from IP&P. Participating teachers will be given a certificate.

The $11-billion US giant chose Ahmedabad after a rigorous analysis of multiple pharma and biotech SEZs. “We considered six other locations including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune and Mohali,” says Fisher BioPharma Services India Pvt Ltd president and managing director Ram Gupta.

The company has acquired 15 acres at Zydus Cadilas Pharmez at Matoda and is putting up a 1.5 lakh sq ft facility to cater to global markets. In the first phase it is injecting $17 million in the greenfield facility that will commence production in the third week of November. Plans are afoot to invest another $50-odd milllion over the next five years in quadrupling capacities.

Incidentally, the Ahmedabad facility is ThermoFishers sixth clinial trial supplies facility and the first of its kind in Asia. The US company has three such plants in US and one each in UK and Switzerland.With over 30,000 employees, the NYSE-listed ThermoFisher caters to nearly 3.5 lakh customers in the pharma and biotech space across 150 countries.

“With pharma and biotech MNCs increasingly looking at India as a human clinical trials destination for new drugs, there was tremendous pressure from clients to set up base in the shortest possible time and Ahmedabad was the only city with completely approved pharma SEZs,” explains Gupta.What also swung things in Ahmedabads favour was the good manpower availability, superior quality of life and affordable living.

“Someone renting a 2BHK apartment in Mumbai or Bangalore can in the same budget easily get a 4BHK apartment or bungalow with a bit of greenery thrown in here,” he says. “Being a pharma and CRO hub, manpower with good technical capabilities at the middle level is easily available here. Its also easier to move top talent from cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad here because of the quality of life,” he adds

Toy train for Kankaria lake has set sail from London on October 22 and will reach city in 45 days. The train has already been christened 

‘Kankaria Queen’ according to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials and this has been embossed on the engine.

For the time being, over 4.5 km long rails are being laid, the work for which is nearing completion. The cot of the rails itself costs around 90,000 pounds while the entire set up with four coaches and engine comes to around 3.1 lakh pounds. Average speed of train is 10 km per hour.

The train would have a capacity of carrying 150 passengers, including 36 adults. One such train is already operational in Disneyland theme park, add officials. “Interiors have been designed to give a feel of the city and its culture. We had sent a detailed presentation to Severn-Lamb, manufacturers of the train,” said AMC commissioner IP Gautam.

Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) was awarded by

the Government of India for leading in economic use of diesel. During 200

5-06, GSRTC had shown an average of 4.72 km per litre.

Despite this, the corporation introduced fuel saving measures. This included proper maintenance, imparting suitable training to drivers, maintaining speed control

of vehicles. All these helped the corporation to increase average to 4.91 km per litre during 2006-07.

India State Road Transport Undertaking and Ministry of Road Transport & Highway, Government of India, found GSRTC one of the leading transportation corporations in the country for minimizing their average fuel consumption.

“The corporation took care to use the spare parts of only standard companies in the ST buses. This helped to decrease the breakdown from 1.30 during 2005-06 to 0.88 during 2006-07 per 10,000 km. The utility range per vehicle during 2006-07 per day increased to 376.55 km, which was a record,” says transport commissioner GS Aloria.

The award was given by the president of All India State Road Transport Undertaking to Gujarat ST Nigam in New Delhi recently.

When I read timeofindia I found this article so inspirational, I like to share with you all. A 17 year girl Greema Patel from ahmedabad can fly in the skies. She has a private flying license from US. She is not eligible to drive car in ahmedabad as RTO not allowed license below the age of 18 year.

Greema had decided to become a pilot when she was in class X. Her dreams took flight at Ahmedabad Aviation and Aeronautics Limited, in Mehsana. After getting 10 hours of flying to her credit, Greema decided it was time to move on.

Her father, who is mukhi (chief) of the village, gave wings to her dreams by sending her to Florida. Between April and September this year, Greema completed 80 hours of flying there. And, when Greema was just two months over 17 years, she got a licence to fly.

“The training period at Florida was very difficult and thrilling at the same time. It was difficult because I was staying alone at the aviation school in Florida and thrilling because of my flights in the skies,” says Greema.

Saturday and I am free and relex. No Official visit to office. I was reading newpaper online and I find new about IIM-A.  Insight 2008, a one-day annual market research event is organized at IIM-A with the title Insight 2008.          

Its play time again at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A). After all its that time of the year when students get busy playing hosts and organising games for visitors – at the oldest festival IIM-A hosts.

Students of IIM-A are to roll out Insight 2008, a one-day annual market research event being conducted by the institute since the last 22 years. The new aspect this year is the case study competition launched with Starcom MediaVest Group.

The competition is open to students of business and management studies. It was launched on September 30 this year and the last date to submit entries is October 12. The winning student will get a cash prise of Rs 50,000. Insight is an activity with a difference where the interesting bit is that for all those who visit the event its just another fair with interactive and activity-based stalls, but for students its a method of market research.

The clients who will buy stalls and be given a specific brief to work on are ICICI, Reebok, Radio Mirchi, Skoda, Tata Motors, ITC, etc.
