He devises online games to save nature

August 31, 2009

Good morning friends.  It feels good to know that there will be an online games to save nature.  Those kids, teens and even adult who were enjoying the online games this is the time for you to give importance to our nature.  You will enjoy the online game and at the same time you can help save our nature.

It all starts in the Stone Age. With the passage of time, the human gradually steps into modern times. This online internet game takes one through different stages of evolution and blends fun with information. It has been devised by Pawan Maulik, an alumnus of National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad.

The game makes the player aware that with growing consumption of water and electricity, natural resources will continue to deplete. It ends with the message that resources need to be urgently conserved and we have to save the environment for future generations.

Endless hours in front of the computer screen, clicking on the mouse and crossing different levels might seem a waste of time for many. But Maulik looked at this recreational activity as a teaching tool.

Maulik, a graduate of Toy and Game Design from the NID batch of 2008, is developing online games that give out a social message at the end. “In my research, I found that people did not like to read pamphlets or literature about social messages on environment. I was looking for some way to make these things interesting for the younger generation. It was then that I started exploring the medium of online games and spreading social messages through them,” said Maulik.

Soon after he graduated from the institute, Maulik started a design studio of his own. He was then accepted as an incubatee at National Design Business Incubatee (NDBI) at NID from where he is operating right now. “The games that are under development right now are on  global warming, tree plantation, power consumption, renewable energy and water conservation. The games would go into the public forum and be accessible in a couple of months. I am waiting for funding and as soon as it is through, these games will be available on already existing online gaming websites,” said Maulik.

When asked how does he think this will be help people playing them, Maulik said, “It’s a play way method which has great success. The player, once he reaches the end of the game, will read and know what made him die, which is the crux of the game.” – The Times of India

Good morning friends.  It’s a good thing to know that our city, Ahmedabad will get two new medical colleges.  For those students who were not been admitted to other medical colleges in the reason that it was already full, here is your chance.  I’m sure that many will be waiting for that.

Aspiring doctors rejoice. With two more medical colleges likely to come up by next year, Ahmedabad will get around 300 medical seats.

The government plans to start a college at Sola Civil Hospital. It will set up a charitable trust to run the institute. The second college will be set up by Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute. GCRI director Dr Pankaj Shah said, “We will start the college in Swadeshi Mill Compound in Asarwa next academic year.”

Ahmedabad already has three medical colleges — B J Medical College at Civil Hospital, NHL Medical College at V S Hospital and AMC Medical College at L G Hospital — that offer 550 seats. Two new medical colleges are likely to be set up in Patan and Valsad.

Confirming the government has approached them, Medical Council of India (MCI) president Dr Ketan Desai said, “We have received Gujarat government’s proposal to set up four colleges. The colleges each have 150 seats each. Classes will begin by 2010.”

City docs give anti-viral drugs to fight flu

August 24, 2009

Good morning friends.  These past few days flu were spreading around.  We have to take care of ourselves by keeping always our hands clean.  Wash it before and after eating.  Eat healthy foods, drink a lot of water and do some exercise.  With that you can prevent acquiring flue.  The city is giving anti-viral drugs to fight flu.

When you visit a family physician for general illness like fever and regular cough or cold, you get the usual antibiotics. But if you do not show symptoms of recovery in two days, now your doctor will administer an anti-viral drug. The antiviral drug treat A and B categories of influenza viruses.

This is the strategy adopted by Mumbai doctors to fight swine flu.

Now, the modus operandi is being adopted by Ahmedabad-based physicians to curb the spread of the HINI infection.

The prescription of anti-viral comes after a WHO directive that was passed on to various states and health authorities by the Central government.

Even in the case of contact treatment, the AMC health department has been administering Tamiflu, without even waiting for a confirmatory report.A senior AMC official said, “Following the Central government directive, we have started differentiating patients on their health conditions. The patients are divided into three categories A,B and C from mild to extreme cases. While category A are mild cases, B symbolizes high-grade fever and lower respiratory problems while C category patients have low blood pressure and inconsistent vomiting. Only patients in the C category are advised to hospitals for medical treatment. The rest are being administered Tamiflu at the initial stages.”

Municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, “Our health teams have identified contacts of positive swine flu patients.

We have started giving them contact treatment till test report comes on their status. We have been maintaining a daily health report of the patients and contact persons,” added Gautam. – The Times of India

Time for play

August 21, 2009

One Saturday, Dhyaan was playing with his other cousins.  I came home with something for my son.  It was a laptop toy.  He noticed my coming towards him so he stood up fast and kissed me.  He saw a box of laptop toy and look at it.  When he saw that it was a toy, he ran fast to our bedroom and show that to her mom.  He excitedly opened the box of toy and started to play with it.

It’s not  the toy I’m talking about here.   No matter how big or small the toy, no matter how expensive or cheap it was, the thought there is how can we make our child happy.  Even with small things, kids are contented for what the things we gave them.

I really enjoyed watching Dhyaan while he was playing his play toy.

India doing enough to combat global warming, says PM

August 18, 2009

Good morning friends.  India is doing the best to combat global warming.  We should all participate to have an environment friendly road.  If possible we should be contributing what we can give to make the situation go into perfection.  Let us be aware.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today rubbished criticism from developed nations that India was not doing enough to combat global warming, saying it fully recognised the importance of the issue. He also said that domestic capacity should be strengthened to meet the challenges arising out of growing energy needs.

“We fully recognise not just how important this issue is to India but also our own obligation to address it,” he said apparently referring to criticism from developed nations on the issue. The Prime Minister was addressing a national conference of state ministers of environment and forests here.

“Our energy needs will increase sharply in the decades to come. We can and must walk a different road, an environment-friendly road,” he said.

For this, Singh said, access to new technologies available with developed countries was required.”We must also make own investments in environment-friendly technologies.

” For strengthening scientific foundations of environment policies and capacity to deal with the challenges, he said, “We must involve more stakeholders particularly youth to lead the movement for environmental protection.” As a step towards this direction, he asked States to create their own action plans consistent with the National Action Plan on Climate Change unveiled last year. – Yahoo

Weak monsoon threatens India

August 12, 2009

Good morning friends.  India was facing the biggest drought of the century because of delayed and weak monsoon.  There is a weak monsoon that threatens India.    I am sure that many will suffer.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, Aug 10 has decided to reduce its estimated rainfall from 93 percent to 87 percent as the monsoon showed no sign of recovery in the country.

For the first time the Met has revised its weather forecast in these many years. The monsoon has become more unpredictable in the first week of Aug while only southern Karnataka, Gujarat and Orissa have received rains in excess of the long-term average between Jun 1 and Aug 5.

IMD Director General Ajit Tyagi told to media that the first 10 days of this month had been specially disappointing for the monsoon, making this downward revision necessary.

He also said, “There has been a prolonged dry spell since Jul 29. Some revival is being seen today with Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa getting rains. But clearly the rainfall is not according to our expectations. The rainfall distribution has also been skewed.”

The IMD which earlier had predicted to get 101 percent of rainfall in Aug, now they have decided to come down to 90 percent and so. Tyagi also added that the next week was going to be ‘extremely crucial’ for the monsoon this season. - Oneindia

India to help Pacific Island states deal with climate change (2)

August 8, 2009

Krishna added that India was committed to providing assistance by way of capacity building as well as project assistance to help Pacific Island countries in the process of adaptation to climate change and to promote the objectives of sustainable development.

‘We are confident that the ‘Look North’ policy of the Pacific countries and the ‘Look East’ policy of India will dovetail to create new synergies as Pacific Island countries are rich in natural resources and there is a vast potential for cooperation in diverse spheres,’ he said.

The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is experiencing major adverse effects of climate change and adaptation to adverse impacts of climate change and sea-level rise remains a major priority for them, he said.

Krishna also unveiled a slew of initiatives for the Pacific Island states, including grant-in-aid of $125,000 each for the 14 eligible Pacific Island countries for the supply of equipment and materials for social and economic programmes and for sustainable development projects.

He offered continued training opportunities to all Pacific Island countries under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme and cooperation in the IT sector. - Yahoo
