Seven eco-friendly ways to get in shape!
December 29, 2008Good morning friends. Two day more. Let’s welcome 2009. I wish everybody will have their prosperous New Year. As Christmas Day ends, a lot of gathering we experience. Everywhere. There is a good news for being in good shape as many forget their diets.
You can easily get in shape while simultaneously preventing the environment by making certain lifestyle changes in the new year, suggests a report.
According to the Environmental News Network, the report contains seven suggestions for achieving this end. One of them is quitting the gym and stopping driving to reach the health club. The reason cited for this is that a majority of people usually stop exercising after a month of two because they do not find it to be fun.
The recommends that people instead try getting outside on foot rather than driving to the gym, as that will help reduce the consumption of fuel and electricity.
Avoidance of buying home exercise equipment is the second suggestion, with the CDC report saying that 40 per cent of such equipment are not used. The report says that people should instead save their money for other things, and keep their carbon footprint low by exercising outside.
The third suggestion is that people better use their legs and get some cardio if their trip is less than a five-minute drive.
Planting trees is the fourth recommendation on the list, with the report suggesting that being outdoors would give people a good workout, and they will create more oxygen for Mother Earth. Fifthly, the report recommends joining the composting club, as activities like dirt-digging and garbage-clearing not only help the environment but build muscles also.
The use of electric bikes, also known as optibikes, finds a mention on the sixth place. Such bikes are fastest ways to get fit and lower the amount of pollution. Finally, the report recommends “starting a ride to work club”. All that this phrase means is that the members of a club should collectively decide whether they would like to ride their bikes to work, or go the old-fashioned route of carpooling.

UK couple to donate Rs 4 cr
December 28, 2008Gujarat University just got richer. It’s not another grant from the state government or UGC but it is a donation in kind by a senior academician all the way from United Kingdom. The couple has committed that they will donate over 7,000 books and journals which are worth close to Rs 3.5 crore.
Professor Nigel J Mason and his wife approached the GU around 15 days ago through an email saying that they are an elderly couple who are interested in donating a collection of books that they have been saving for almost 40 years. Professor Mason is from the department of physics and astronomy at the Open University, Walton Hall, UK. The university officials said the couple found about GU while they were doing a search online.
“The collection of books that the couple has shown interest in donating include more than 7,000 books and journals on various topics of science, technology, national geography, environment, humanity and space sciences,” said GU vice-chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi.
“The couple has kept the consignment ready and have said that they are going to share the cost of sending the consignment, which is close to Rs 4 lakh. We are hoping that the books will be with us in around two months. They will be placed in the university library in a separate section dedicated to the couple,” said Trivedi.

Toothy truths – 2
December 27, 2008Cosmetic dentistry includes everything from having that perfect smile, covering stains on the teeth and covering gaps between teeth to use of veneers on teeth, tooth-bleaching, tooth-whitening and composite resigning. “There’s increased awareness about the cosmetic dentistry, especially among the youth. Depending upon their affordability, patients don’t mind spending money on such treatments,” says dentist Piyush Heda.
A lot of research is going on in the field cosmetic dentistry. With different methods and materials available to implement such treatments, people in their 40s and 50s too are opting for cosmetic dentistry, says Heda.
Even the Indian Orthodontists’ Society is trying to spread awareness among people about the various treatments available.
Given the impact of media and the rising number of accidents in the city, those opting for maxillofacial surgery too, are on the rise. From removing post-accident discrepancies and cancerous tumours in the face and the mouth to getting a finely chiselled jawline or a picture perfect smile, oral maxillofacial surgery does it all. “Those in the marriageable age want the best of smiles or a proportionate facial structure. They want such corrections to build their confidence and improve their personality,” explains oral maxillofacial surgeon Kiran Gadre.
One jaw surgery costs upwards of Rs 60,000. “But with a changing financial status and better social impact, people have the liquid money and the willingness to go for such treatments,” Gadre adds.
The Indian Dental Association (IDA) is raising awareness among the people about the different kinds of dental treatments available in the country. Currently, Pune has around 1,500 dentists, out of which some 300 are members of IDA’s Pune branch. “We want to bring the dental fraternity in Pune city together by conducting workshops and seminars on the latest treatments,” says Vivek Pakhmode, president of IDA’s Pune branch.

2008 at a glance for Dhirendra
December 26, 2008Good Evening friends,
Merry Christmas to all. I like to wish HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. Beginning of 2009 and end for 2008. Time is running out very fast. I feel like 2008 just started few weeks back. And we are at end of 2008 now. 361 days completed. Just 4 days left now. Isn’t its time to make a evaluation statement for our self? Where I was at the beginning of 2008 and where I am at the end of 2008.
Business needs to make evaluation statements at regular intervals. Like weekly report, monthly statement, quarterly statement, half yearly statement and yearly statements. If you are aware with what business communities doing with all these statements, each statement get analyze. Top level management evaluates the monthly statement and from that they predict and plan for half yearly and yearly behavior of company. Again with quarterly statements they compare what was projected and what happy in actual, than plan again for next quarter. And with such analysis businesses makes profits and earn money. If they don’t analyze their behaviors during the year, they don’t come to know where they are going- towards profits or towards loose?
Same way in human life, each day passes with guarantee of not going to come back.
There is no one to ask us about our profits and loose as being human weather we are going towards upward side in life or towards downward? I believe as there is no one to ask us, we need to be more conscious about that part because there is no control on that.
I think one should ask following questions to him/her self.
- Do I need to analyze year 2008 for my self?
- Year 2008 good or bad for me as individual in material sense.
- Year 2008 good or bad for me as individual with reference to me as human, me as live identity or we can say it with reference to spirituality?
We talk more in next post.
Toothy truth – 1
December 26, 2008Good morning friends. Different style, different smile….There will always be a perfection to everything. I want to share with you the article a read in reference with The Times of India….
There are more to the changes in lifestyle than just pretty clothes. A bright smile, for instance, can be a style statement too, provided you have a great set of teeth. If not, all you need to know is the address of a good dentist.
It’s a fact. Changes in our lifestyle are reflecting on our oral hygiene with people from all age groups heading to the dentist. They aren’t just getting a root canal done or a broken tooth capped, but also opting for fancier dental treatmenI wts, better known as cosmetic dentistry for that picture perfect smile.
Vijay Deshmukh, who specialises in dental implants, makes an interesting observation. “These days, patients demand dental implants because they know the advantages of such a treatment.”
Priced anywhere between Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000, a dental implant can be performed within a span of 20 to 60 minutes. The patient’s psyche, when it comes to paying for such a treatment, too has changed. They don’t mind those dental treatments anymore,” says Deshmukh, who attends to some 20 patients per month, as against to not more than eight a few years ago.
At the same time, dental tourism is on the rise, he says. “This involves non-resident Indian (NRIs) and foreigners coming to India for dental treatments done as these treatments are six to ten times costlier in their respective countries,” says Deshmukh, who have patients from countries such as Sweden, Spain and the US.
Dentists say it is a costly affair as the treatment costs are calculated as per the infrastructure in the dental clinic, the inputs for each patient and the other costs. “But the awareness about dental treatments has definitely increased among people,” says orthodontist Ravindra Sable.

This news is something makes me exited. I have climbed Mount Girnar and I know the beauty of Mount Girnar. Once we have Wi-Fi, it’s be more easy for blogger like me, Wi-Fi network helps me to update all my blogs when I am on vacation.
The pilgrim’s progress on Gujarat’s tallest mountain is set to be Wi-Fi-enabled. So, the next time you climb mount Girnar, you may carry
your laptop to keep a tab on work as well.
“It’s not viable to lay a cable network on the mountain. So we plan to install Wi-Fi system around the walking track on the mountain,” said district collector Ashwani Kumar. While he refused to reveal the project cost, Kumar said the administration was in talks with a few companies and final decision will be taken soon’.
Over 25 lakh tourists throng about 30 temples, including famous Ambaji Mandir and Jain Derasar, dotting the seven peaks of the 1100-metre tall mountain.
The decision to make the mountain Wi-Fi enabled was taken to webcast the 25th Girnar climbing competition which is slated for next month.
“We wanted to take the event to a wider audience through webcast. Though we decided to install Wi-Fi for webcasting the competition, we will continue the use the technology even after the competition,” he said.
An average of 1,000 contestants participate in the event. This time around about 1,800 participants will join the event.
“Girnar climbing competition started in 1971 and continued up to 1979. Again efforts were made to rejuvenate the competition in 1991 by State Bank of Saurashtra. But the event has been regularly organised since 1996 in both men and women category after the state government took over,” said Devashi Ambalia, project director of the event.
