Lunar eclipse continues – 1

This is where the road ends and the sand takes over.  The surrender is complete.  Beyond, there’s nothing, not even a single hut.  This is the last village, the Pakistan border is barely 5 km away. 

 

Nobody has come here to campaign, and nobody will. The sitting BJP MLA, Sang Singh, came here once five years ago, to ask for votes, and never returned.

But the local people here aren’t really upset about it. They mention it, but only in passing. It isn’t important enough.

On Sunday afternoon, there are other issues to discuss, chillums to share, opium to chew. Besides, there’s been a death in the village and half the local people have gathered in the round-shaped community hall — kotari as the locals call it — to take stock. Conversation meanders to politics too.

“Gordhan Das Kalla is a good man,” says Madho Singh, a retired havildar who had been posted on the Kashmir border. “He was a poor man’s leader. But Congress has not given him a ticket.”

But Kalla is contesting as an Independent. Will he vote for him?

“He is of the same age as us. Whether he wins or not he has always been amongst us. 

 

He has been coming here and has always helped anyone who needed it. So, at a time when his party has ditched him we have to be with him.”
