India Test-Fires Surface-to-Surface Missile ‘Shourya’

November 13, 2008

Good Morning friends,

Today is full moon day and last day of diwali too. Last day is called Dev Diwali (diwali for god). I need to go out of station today to celebrate birthday of one temple we are attached with. In the evening as it is full moon day, I need to attend ritual in the evening. A busy day with social responsibilities and business too.

Good news for all Indian. The surface-to-surface Shourya missile with a range of 600-km was successfully test-fired by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Orissa on Wednesday. The medium range missile, capable of hitting targets inside Pakistan and China, soared into the sky under perfect weather conditions at 11.25 am from an underground facility with an in-built canister from the ITR’s launching complex, about 230-km from here.

The missile is capable of carrying conventional warheads with a payload of about one tonne. Soon after the test, senior DRDO scientists at Chandipur said, “The missile can be easily handled, transported and stored within the canister for longer shelf life.

The high manoeuvrability of the missile makes it less vulnerable to available anti-missile defence systems. This developmental flight trial of Shourya missile system is a part of the ongoing technology development work undertaken by the DRDO.”
